Plastic and Cosmetic Procedures

Plastic surgery includes both Cosmetic and Reconstructive procedures.

Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to enhance a normal appearance. Cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance, as it is not medically necessary. Some examples of cosmetic procedures are breast augmentation (implants), breast lift, liposuction, facelifts, tummy tucks, and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).

Reconstructive surgery is performed on structures of the body affected by congenital defects, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is performed to improve function or to approximate a more normal appearance. Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by health insurance policies, although coverage for specific procedures does vary greatly with the individual policy. Some common reconstructive procedures include breast reduction for back pain, breast reconstruction after mastectomy, trauma from an accident and skin cancer reconstruction.

Occasionally it is difficult to determine whether a procedure is cosmetic or reconstructive and therefore whether it is covered by insurance or not. For example, removal of excess skin after massive weight loss or gastric bypass surgery is sometimes covered and sometimes is not. We will help you find out whether your insurance policy covers the surgery you are considering.
